Harry Bergeest began his martial arts training in Vancouver Canada in 1982 under Tomoaki Koyabu Sensei. Koyabu Sensei was asked to bring the Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate school of Shorei Kan Karate to Canada by the founder Master Seikichi Toguchi, a direct student of Chojun Myagi, in 1972. Harry received his shodan in 1986 and in that year also had the privilege of performing at the Japanese pavilion during  Expo 86.

In 1990 Harry took over as Chief Instructor at a branch dojo as the past instructor was opening up a new dojo closer to his home. In 1996 Harry had to give up the post of Chief Instructor due to personal problems but still continued to train and teach.

In 2003 Harry opened up a new Shorei-kan Dojo in a suburb of Vancouver and remained there as Chief Instructor till October 2013 when He emigrated to Mandurah in Western Australia. Harry also held the position of Vice President of the Shorei-Kan Canada Karate Association.
