Which school?

How to choose a school

In the Mandurah area there are several martial arts schools. So how do you choose the right one for you or your child?  Here are some tips to help you choose the right school for the right reasons.

The first thing to know about choosing a martial arts school is that you already know how to do it! You evaluate a martial arts school the same way that you would evaluate any school. In other words use your judgment when choosing. There really are no secrets in this - just look for one that is proficient at the fundamentals in customer service.

The facility
Just like any business, the way the school looks and its cleanliness tell you about the attitude of the owner. If it looks clean and organised and it looks professional then it probably is. Does it have changing rooms, showers and a toilet? How about an area for spectators to sit and watch?

Attitude
Bad attitude equals bad school. When talking to other students, the instructors or the owner and you get a feeling that rubs you up the wrong way then you probably should not join that school.

Financial arrangements
Some martial arts schools ask you to sign a contract for a certain length of time. That is OK as the school has to make a living and sell its tuition and generate cash flow just like any other business.  You should think twice about signing a contract under the following conditions:

  • You have not been given adequate time to evaluate the experience the school provides
  • The contract has no get out clause or the penalty for early withdrawal is high
  • The owner is not willing to remove some of the conditions if asked that you do not like

At the Martial Arts Education Centre we strive to have a positive outlook on everything. We do not ask you to sign a contract for the first few months so that you can have an excellent opportunity to see if we have something to offer you.

Gut instinct
At the end of the day you should have a gut instinct telling you whether you have chosen a good school or not. Hopefully at the Martial Arts Education Centre your gut instinct will be good.
