Chief instructor Dr Nigel Farrier has studied several different styles of Karate and Ju Jitsu and has put together a series of training programs specifically designed for the younger child, the slightly older child and for children approaching their teens as well as for the adult.
8 to 12 year olds are taught a formal style of karate with the Japanese language being used as this is a traditional style. The structure of the class is formal and a variety of character building exercises also being required for grading and advancement.
13 years and over are taught as a senior karate class. Once again the karate is a very formal style based upon the Shotokan system.
Ju Jitsu is more a form of self defence or combat for the modern day. It does involve joint locks, throws and weapons and it is only taught to the more mature person. 2006 saw the introduction of ju jitsu for children from ages 8 to 12 as well. This class, however, deals more with the basics but still covers some of the throws, locks and self defence techniques that you will find in the senior classes 2007 sees the introduction of weaapons courses. Weapons covered over the next few years include Nitan Bo (arnis combat fighting sticks), Sai, Bo & Jo, Bokken, Kama, Tonfa and Nun Chaku. Apart from the above set classes private lessons are also available on request.
KOSHIN BUSHIDO KAI KARATE, JU JITSU, KOBUDO
For many years I have sought a name for the style that we teach at the Martial Arts Education Centre.
Gichin Funakoshi said ‘Cherish the old but embrace the new’. It was when I read this that I realised that we were teaching a style of ju jitsu and karate that embodied this philosophy. Ko (old) and Shin (new) bring out what I believe to be the state of current martial arts as taught by us.
We have cherished the old - the rituals, the respect, the kata and so on but we have also embraced the new by continually developing the system as we now include knife defences, gun defences, defences against baseball bat and bike chain attacks to name a few.
Koshin Bushido Kai translates as ‘Old and New Warrior Way Federation’ and I feel that this reflects in our teachings and allows us to continually develop the system to incorporate new ideas. For membership of this federation please email us at the following email address.
