JAPANESE JU JITSU
Instructor Dr Nigel Farrier’s love for ju jitsu comes out in the practice sessions. Although each senoir class is supposed to continue for 90 minutes the majority of classes last a lot longer due to the enjoyable nature of each class.
The system taught is based more on self defence type situations and incorporates locks, takedowns, throws and weapons and is basically a full on system of self defence.
The style is an amalgamation of different styles and knowledge accumulated over years of study and still it continues to develop as new ideas are found.
As part of that ongoing development ju jitsu classes for ages 8 to 12 has began in 2006.
Japanese Ju Jitsu places emphasis on locking, strangles, takedowns, throws and immobilising your opponent. Striking and kicking do not have quite the emphasis that is inherent in some other martial arts such as traditional karate. This is possibly a result of the history of the art. Samurai used to wear body armour which acted as protection against the striking arts so they developed other systems of fighting and restraining their opponents. Striking is still used to certain vulnerable areas of the body in order to create an unbalancing of the opponent (kuzushi).
Weapons also play and integral role in the study of Japanese Ju Jitsu and include the Sai, Bo, Katana, Tonfa and Kama. One also has to study how to counter attacks with these weapons. As part of our system we have also introduced modern day weapons such as hand guns, knife fighting, bike chain attacks and so on (hence our name Koshin - old and new)
Beginners are always welcome in our classes and if you are unsure please either bring a friend along to train with or just sit and watch a class.
