About chief instructor Dr Nigel Farrier
Hello. My name is Dr Nigel Farrier and I have been studying the martial arts since around 1990. I first became involved as my sons wanted to ‘do karate’ as a friend of theirs was doing it.
Although I had had a life long desire for the martial arts since seeing the very first Bruce Lee movie way back when, I always thought that it was out of my reach or just too hard!
After a few weeks of taking my sons to their karate classes I was talked into joining myself. Well, you guessed it, my kids eventually stopped going after about one year but I am still there some seventeen years later!
I started with Shotokan Karate and obtained my first black belt through them and Kanazawa Sensei, Murakami Sensei and Shotokan Karate International Australia. After that I looked around to expand my knowledge about the martial arts in general. It was during this period that I discovered ju jitsu.
Whilst studying karate Nigel also discovered his love for kobudo (weapons) and began a study of Bo and Sai initially. This has expanded to include bokken and sword along with the nun chaku, tonfa, kama and others.
Dr Nigel Farrier is now ranked Yondan (4th degree black belt) through the International Martial Arts Alliance and was graded by a panel of three including 6th degree black belts and a 10th degree black belt.
The Martial Arts Education Centre has been serving the martial arts industry in and around Mandurah, Western Australia since 1st October 2002 when it was first opened. However, chief instructor Dr Nigel Farrier has been instructing since 1996. Initially renting various community and private halls it was in 2002 that he decided to ‘bite the bullet’ and move into a purpose built dojo (training hall). In 2006, Nigel has taken another ‘bite at a bullet’ and has actually purchased a unit to move in to. This has now happened and the new dojo (training hall) started training on 28th August 2006 This new dojo has two toilets, a shower and two change rooms as well as 168 square meters of mat training space.
At the Martial Arts Education Centre we teach martial arts rather than martial sports. Competitions are not something that we promote as the only competition, we believe, is with oneself. Once you have mastered yourself no other competition is relevant.
Currently Nigel and the Martial Arts Education Centre are members of The International Martial Arts Alliance, IAOMAS, the Australian Ju Jitsu Federation, the Okinawa Kobudo Doushi Rensei Kai, the International Brotherhood of Martial Arts and the Martial Arts Instructors Association (See our links page for links to these organisations).
